Margate has gone from faded Kent seaside town to legitimate arts destination, largely off the back of the Turner Contemporary gallery, which opened in 2011 and turned a grubby harbour town into somewhere Londoners now take day trips. Dreamland, the vintage amusement park, adds a nostalgic funfair pull, and the Old Town is genuinely good for vintage shops and independent cafes.
The regeneration is patchy — walk two streets back from the seafront and you'll still find shuttered shops and the general wear of a town that spent decades in decline before the recent turnaround. The beach itself is a proper sandy one, better than most people expect from this coast.
