Staying in Massa Lubrense
Massa Lubrense is the quieter tip of the Sorrento peninsula, a scatter of hamlets spread across hillsides of olive groves and lemon terraces that look straight across the water to Capri. It is less a town than a collection of villages: Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi on the ridge with views over both the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno, the fishing coves of Marina della Lobra and Marina del Cantone, and Nerano, which gave its name to spaghetti with fried courgettes.
The Punta Campanella marine reserve and the Bay of Ieranto offer some of the cleanest swimming and best coastal walking in the region. Be honest: beaches are small and pebbly, the roads are steep and winding, and without a car you depend on infrequent buses, so day trips to Pompeii or Herculaneum mean first getting to Sorrento for the train. Stay near the main village or Marina della Lobra if you want easy access to Sorrento, or in Nerano and Marina del Cantone if you want sea and seclusion.
