Staying in Meta
Meta di Sorrento is the first town you hit on the Sorrento Peninsula's northern shore, a small, workaday place of lemon groves, cliffside villas and a proud seafaring past that once supplied captains and sailors to Italian merchant fleets. Its landmark is the Basilica of Santa Maria del Lauro, and below the cliffs sit two of the peninsula's few real beaches, Marina di Meta and Alimuri, a rarity on a coast otherwise dominated by rocks and paid lidos.
Be honest: the sand is dark, volcanic and narrow, it gets packed on summer weekends when Neapolitans pour in, and the town has none of Sorrento's polish or nightlife. What it does offer is lower-key living and an easy base for day trips, with the Circumvesuviana railway running straight to Pompeii and Herculaneum and on towards Mount Vesuvius and Naples, while Sorrento itself is a few minutes away. Stay in the centre near the Circumvesuviana station for walkable access to the trains, shops and the steps down to the beaches.
