Staying in Olhão
Olhão is the Algarve's working fishing port, a real town rather than a resort, and that is its main appeal. The old quarter is a tangle of whitewashed, flat-roofed cubist houses with a distinctly North African look, and the waterfront is anchored by twin red-brick market halls, one for fish and one for fruit and vegetables, which make the best Saturday morning in the eastern Algarve. The town faces the Ria Formosa lagoon rather than the open Atlantic, so there is no proper beach in town.
Swimming means a ferry to the barrier islands of Armona, Culatra or Farol, which have long, sandy and blissfully undeveloped beaches. Be honest: parts of the centre are scruffy, nightlife is modest, and some newer waterfront development sits awkwardly beside the old fabric. Faro airport is a short drive away, which makes Olhão an easy, less touristy alternative to Faro itself. Stay in the old town near the markets and ferry pier so you can walk to dinner and to the island boats.
