Staying in Rosyth
Rosyth is a working town on the north shore of the Firth of Forth in Fife, built in the early twentieth century as a planned garden city to house workers for its naval dockyard. That dockyard still defines the place: it's where the Royal Navy's largest aircraft carriers were assembled, and the giant cranes dominate the waterfront.
This is not a sightseeing destination in itself, and the town centre is functional rather than charming. Its real appeal is location. Across the water lie Blackness Castle and Linlithgow Palace, and Loch Leven Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned, is an easy run up the M90. Stay near the motorway junctions close to the bridges for the quickest access to Edinburgh, the airport and the rest of Fife.
Typical weather
October here averages 9°C, with around 93 mm of rain across the month.
