Staying in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains
Saint-Gervais-les-Bains sits at the foot of Mont Blanc on the French side, a proper Haute-Savoie spa town that predates the ski-resort boom by a century — the thermal baths at Le Fayet have been drawing visitors since the 1800s, and that older, more genteel identity still shows in the architecture around the centre. It's also a serious mountain base: the tramway du Mont-Blanc departs from here, and the skiing links into the vast Evasion Mont-Blanc area, so in winter it functions as a proper resort without the purpose-built ski-station ugliness of some neighbours.
Be honest: it's quieter and less fashionable than Chamonix down the valley, with fewer bars and a more family, spa-going crowd, which suits some travellers and bores others. With only eight hotels listed here, choice is limited, so book early in peak winter and August weeks. Stay near the town centre for walkable access to the thermal baths and the tramway station rather than out toward the satellite hamlets.
