Staying in Troon
Wind comes in hard off the Firth of Clyde at Troon, and on a clear day the peaks of Arran sit across the water like a painted backdrop. This Ayrshire seaside town is known above all for golf: Royal Troon, a links course on the dunes, has hosted the Open Championship, and the fairways run along the shore south of the centre. The town itself mixes sandstone houses, a harbour and sandy beaches either side of the headland, good for a bracing walk whatever the sky is doing.
Rain and wind arrive often on this coast, so pack for both. The castle and cathedral on our list are not in Troon: Ayr Cathedral stands in Ayr, and Culzean Castle sits on the clifftops further down the Ayrshire coast. Troon has no bus station of its own, and the bus stations we cover are in Ayr and Kilmarnock. Our catalogue holds 7 hotels here, so choice is modest. Stay near the seafront if you want the beaches and the golf, or on the Prestwick side if an early flight from Glasgow Prestwick Airport matters more.
