History
The Hundred is English cricket's newest showpiece, a 100-ball competition launched by the England and Wales Cricket Board in 2021 after a year's pandemic delay, built around eight city franchises whose men's and women's sides share almost every match day. London Spirit call Lord's home, and no ground carries more history: cricket has been played on this St John's Wood site since 1814, when Thomas Lord laid out the third and final home of the ground that bears his name.
Owned by MCC and long styled the Home of Cricket, Lord's blends its Victorian pavilion of 1890 with the futuristic Media Centre, which won the Stirling Prize in 1999, all set beside the famous slope across the outfield. It is the spiritual heart of the game and the traditional stage for the competition's Finals Day, where Oval Invincibles' men sealed a historic third straight title in 2025. London Spirit's women lifted their own crown in 2024.
Records & quirks
- The Hundred gives each side 100 balls, with bowlers delivering sets of five or ten deliveries rather than traditional six-ball overs.
- Cricket has been played on the current Lord's ground since 1814, the third site laid out by founder Thomas Lord.
- The Lord's Media Centre, opened in 1999, won that year's Stirling Prize for architecture.
- The Lord's outfield famously slopes around 2.5 metres from one side to the other.
- Lord's traditionally hosts The Hundred's Finals Day; Oval Invincibles' men clinched a third consecutive men's title there in 2025.
- London Spirit's women were crowned champions of The Hundred in 2024.
