Braemar is a granite Highland village deep in the Cairngorms, an hour and a half west of Aberdeen up Royal Deeside. It's walking and estate country most of the year, with a castle and serious mountain scenery, but the first Saturday of September belongs to the Braemar Gathering — the most famous of the Highland games, traditionally attended by the royal family from Balmoral down the road.

The village has very few beds: the Fife Arms is the splashy option, and everything sells out long before Gathering weekend. Ballater, 17 miles east, is the usual overflow; Aberdeen works if you don't mind the drive. Book far ahead and pack for weather.
