Fujinomiya's main draw is right overhead: it sits on the western flank of Mount Fuji and holds the traditional pilgrim gateway, Fujinomiya Hongu Sengen Taisha, the head shrine of Fuji worship, plus the start of the Fujinomiya Trail for climbers heading up in summer season. It's a working town of around 121,000 people rather than a resort, with a smaller, quieter feel than the Fuji Five Lakes area on the mountain's other side, and it trades that lower profile for genuinely good views on clear days and a strong local food scene built around its famous yakisoba.

Outside climbing season and shrine visits there isn't much to fill more than a day, and transport links are more limited than the lake towns, so you'll want your own schedule sorted.
