Gières is a small commune on the eastern edge of Grenoble, tucked against the Belledonne foothills and best known as a university and student-housing satellite rather than a destination in its own right. Most people who stay here are visiting Grenoble for business, transferring to the tram line into the city centre, or heading straight for hiking and skiing in Belledonne and the Chartreuse.
Be honest: there's little reason to linger in Gières itself — it lacks the museums, restaurants and old-town charm of central Grenoble, and evenings are quiet.
