Maitland is one of Australia's oldest inland cities, a Hunter Valley river town that boomed on coal, wool and convict-era construction before Newcastle eclipsed it as the region's commercial centre. The heritage streetscape around High Street survives largely intact, with sandstone facades and colonial buildings that give it more historic character than most towns its size, and its convict and bushranger history draws a steady trickle of history-minded visitors.

Be honest: Maitland itself is not a destination in the way the Hunter Valley wine country nearby is — most travellers pass through en route to vineyards, or stay here specifically because it's cheaper and less touristy than Pokolbin or Cessnock. The Hunter River has flooded the town repeatedly over its history, so low-lying areas have seen real damage in living memory. Stay near the CBD and High Street for easy access to the historic core and quickest onward drives into wine country.
