Sydney's harbour genuinely earns the fuss — the Opera House and Harbour Bridge from a Circular Quay ferry is one of the great city views, and the ferries themselves are the best-value sightseeing going. Beyond that it is an outdoors city: the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, surf beaches, and Manly a 20-minute ferry away.
It is spread out and expensive, with hotel rates among the highest in Australia, and the CBD goes quiet at night. Stay around The Rocks or Circular Quay if the harbour is the priority, Surry Hills or Darlinghurst for cafés, small bars and better-value rooms, or Bondi and Manly if you would rather commute in from the beach than out to it.
