Santa Margherita Ligure is the gateway to Portofino, sharing the same glittering stretch of Riviera di Levante coast but with a working train station and none of the queues. Its promenade of pastel villas gives onto Villa Durazzo's terraced gardens, and the Cervara Abbey, a clifftop monastery with its own Italian garden, stands on a headland just outside town.

Fishing boats still land here alongside the yachts, and the baroque Basilica of Santa Margherita is a five-minute walk from the harbour. Be honest: in August the town fills with day-trippers heading on to Portofino, and rooms carry a serious resort premium. Stay near the harbour for the passenger ferries to Portofino and the Cinque Terre.
