Schwechat is the town on Vienna's southeastern edge that gives Vienna International Airport its official name, Flughafen Wien-Schwechat, built on a site first developed as a military airfield in 1938. It is also a genuine brewing town: the Dreher Brewery, founded here in 1796, pioneered Vienna lager under Anton Dreher in the mid-19th century and grew into one of Europe's largest breweries.

The town has Roman-era roots, was briefly absorbed into Vienna itself between 1938 and 1954, and today combines the airport with an oil refinery and other heavy industry along the Danube. Be honest: Schwechat is an industrial and transit town rather than a scenic one, most of central Vienna's Ringstrasse sights are a short train ride away. Stay in Schwechat for an airport-convenient night, or head into central Vienna for the palaces and museums.
