Staying in Singaraja
Singaraja was the Dutch colonial capital of Bali and the island's main port and trading hub until the mid-twentieth century, and it still shows: fading colonial shophouses, a busy old harbour area, and a slower, more workaday pace than the tourist south. It's the north's real city rather than a resort town, so you come here for temples, old architecture and Buddhist and Chinese heritage rather than beaches or nightlife.
Be honest: there isn't much to actually do within the city itself, and most visitors use it as a base for the surrounding highlands and coast — Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, Gitgit Waterfall and the Bali Botanic Garden are all a manageable drive away. Stay near the old harbour and town centre, where you're closest to the market, food stalls and what little colonial architecture remains, with day trips inland from there.
