Swansea is Wales's second city, a working port town that never quite shook its industrial identity despite the sweep of Swansea Bay at its front door. Dylan Thomas called it "an ugly, lovely town," and that tension still holds: a maritime quarter with a genuinely good National Waterfront Museum sits near a city centre still patched together after wartime bombing and later redevelopment. The Marina area has the best concentration of things to do, while St Joseph's Cathedral marks the older, more residential fringe away from the water.

Be honest: the shopping centre and much of the retail core are unremarkable, and this isn't a city that rewards aimless wandering the way Cardiff does. What Swansea has going for it is proximity to the Gower Peninsula, one of Britain's best coastlines, and a more affordable, less touristy base than Cardiff.
