Hotels near Baggotrath Castle

Georgian brick terraces and fanlit doorways now line the streets near where Baggotrath Castle once stood, south of the old city of Dublin. The castle took its name from the Bagod family, whose manor of Baggotrath also gave Baggot Street its name, so the old estate lives on in every street sign along the route. Come for the ground it held and the history attached to it, not for towers and battlements. The castle's documented moment came during the Battle of Rathmines, when Royalist forces under the Marquess of Ormond sent troops to occupy and fortify it. They were attacked before the work was finished, and the fighting spread across the fields towards Rathmines. With that in mind, the orderly Georgian lines of Baggot Street take on an older outline as they run down to the Grand Canal.
