Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via is a small Pyrenean commune on the Cerdagne plateau best known for two things: its purpose-built altitude-training centre, which has hosted Olympic athletes for decades, and the solar furnace at Odeillo, a striking curved mirror wall that remains a genuine piece of research infrastructure rather than a tourist gimmick. The area claims some of the highest sunshine counts in France, which makes it popular with both athletes and skiers heading to the modest local slopes.

Be honest: this is not a town with much of a centre or nightlife — permanent population is under 2,000, and the appeal is entirely about altitude, air quality and access to the mountains rather than urban charm. Stay in Odeillo if you want proximity to the solar furnace and easier road access; Font-Romeu itself sits closer to the ski lifts.
