Staying in Puerto del Carmen
Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote's main resort strip, running along more than six kilometres of golden sand beaches, Playa Grande and Los Pocillos among the best, backed by the Avenida de las Playas promenade of bars, restaurants and shops. It is the liveliest base on an island otherwise shaped by Cesar Manrique's volcanic-inspired architecture and the black lava fields of Timanfaya National Park, both a short drive away.
Boat trips run to the clear waters of Papagayo, and buggy tours head inland across the volcanic scenery that makes Lanzarote distinctive. The resort itself is modern package-tourism infrastructure rather than a historic town, built up from what was a small fishing village within living memory. Stay along Avenida de las Playas for beach access and nightlife, or the Old Town end near the harbour for a quieter, more local feel.
