Virginia Water is a wealthy Surrey commuter village best known for two things: the ornamental lake and gardens at the southern end of Windsor Great Park, free to wander and genuinely beautiful, and Wentworth Club, the gated golf estate whose West Course hosts the BMW PGA Championship — the European tour's flagship event — each September.

The village itself is essentially a station, a parade of shops and expensive houses, with very little hotel stock, so treat it as a place you visit rather than sleep. Stay in Egham, Ascot or Windsor for the nearest beds, or come out from London — trains from Waterloo take around 50 minutes — booking ahead for BMW PGA week.
