Staying in Bury St Edmunds
Bury St Edmunds is a Suffolk market town built around the ruins of one of medieval England's great Benedictine abbeys, where St Edmund himself was buried and pilgrims once flocked. The Abbey Gardens make good use of the ruins, and the town's Georgian streets, particularly around the Cathedral and Angel Hill, are genuinely handsome rather than merely tidy.
It's also home to Greene King, and the brewery smell drifting through town is part of the character, along with a proper Victorian theatre in the Theatre Royal. It's a small town of around 43,000 people, so evenings are quiet and there's little in the way of nightlife beyond a few decent pubs. Shopping and market days (Wednesday and Saturday) bring the most life to the centre. Stay near Angel Hill or the Cathedral quarter, so the abbey ruins and main sights are a short walk from your door.
