Kloten is, for most visitors, simply where Zürich Airport lives: the runways, terminals and much of the surrounding business district sit on the town's territory, making it Switzerland's main gateway to the world. Beyond the airport it is a modest, tidy commuter town of around sixteen thousand people, best known locally for its ice hockey club, EHC Kloten, and its devoted fan base. Be honest: there is little here to hold a sightseer for long, and aircraft noise and the steady hum of transit traffic define the atmosphere more than any old-town charm.
The upside is efficiency. Swiss rail links from the airport station reach Zürich Hauptbahnhof in a short ride, putting the medieval lanes around St. Peter, the Wasserkirche and the Zentralbibliothek within easy reach for anyone with an afternoon to spare. Treat Kloten as a practical base rather than a destination. Stay near the airport and its rail station if you have an early flight or a short layover, since you can walk to your terminal and still reach central Zürich quickly.
