Geneva runs on water and diplomacy: the Jet d'Eau throws a 140-metre plume of lake water over the harbour as the city's signature, and just uphill sits the European headquarters of the UN at the Palais des Nations, with CERN and its Large Hadron Collider out towards the French border. The Old Town is Switzerland's largest historic quarter, a hilly tangle of lanes around Saint-Pierre Cathedral, and Lake Geneva itself gives the whole place its calm, mountain-ringed setting.
The catch is the cost — Geneva ranks among the most expensive cities in the world, and a modest dinner will remind you of it fast. It is also fairly buttoned-up rather than raucous. Stay in the Old Town or just below it near the lake to walk to the cathedral, the waterfront and the Jet d'Eau in minutes.
