Staying in Zurich
Zurich is Switzerland's biggest city and its most liveable showcase: a spotless old town on the Limmat, a lake clean enough that locals swim in it on summer lunch breaks, and the Kunsthaus with one of Europe's better collections. The Alps aren't in the city, but Uetliberg is twenty minutes by train for a proper panorama, and day trips to genuine mountains are easy.
The honest part: it is startlingly expensive — a basic lunch can cost what dinner costs elsewhere — and evenings are more relaxed lakeside drink than late-night chaos, Langstrasse excepted. Stay in the Altstadt or around the lake's northern tip for the pretty walkable core, or near the Hauptbahnhof if you're using Zurich as a rail base for the mountains, which it does superbly.
