Portsmouth is the Royal Navy's home city and its Historic Dockyard is the reason to come: HMS Victory (Nelson's flagship, still in commission), the Mary Rose in its dramatic museum, and HMS Warrior together justify the combined ticket and a full day. The Spinnaker Tower gives the Solent panorama, and Southsea — the city's seaside quarter — adds a pebble beach, two piers, good independent cafés along Albert Road and a proper promenade.
It's a dense island city, plain in the rebuilt post-war stretches, and the seafront wind is reliable year-round. Stay in Southsea for the beach, cafés and evening options, or at Gunwharf Quays beside the Dockyard if the ships and the outlet shopping are the point and you want everything within a short walk.
