Singapore is the easiest city in Asia: clean, safe, air-conditioned and superbly connected, with the catch that it is also one of the most expensive. The real draw is food — hawker centres like Maxwell and Lau Pa Sat serve chicken rice and laksa for a few pounds, and eating well here needs no budget at all even if sleeping does.

Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay supply the futuristic skyline; Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam supply the character and the best-value hotels. Everything sits on the MRT, so location is forgiving. Stay in Chinatown or around Bugis for value and atmosphere, or splash out at Marina Bay if the skyline view is the point of the trip.
