Staying in St Albans
St Albans is one of Melbourne's most multicultural suburbs, its Main Road East and Alfrieda Street food strips lined with Vietnamese restaurants, bakeries and grocers since the community took root here in the 1980s. Vietnamese is the largest heritage group in a suburb that also has strong Filipino, Indian, Maltese and Eastern European populations, with the train station a short walk from most of the good eating.
It is a working-class, high-density pocket of Melbourne's western suburbs, not a tourist strip, with older housing stock and a reputation for cheap, excellent food over polish. Be honest: there is little to see beyond the food itself, and none of inner Melbourne's period architecture or nightlife. Stay near the station on Main Road East for the widest choice of Vietnamese kitchens within walking distance.
Typical weather
October here averages 14°C, with around 61 mm of rain across the month.
November here averages 16°C, with around 74 mm of rain across the month.
