Ryde is the main gateway to the Isle of Wight, with the passenger ferry and hovercraft from Portsmouth landing right in town, which makes it more transit hub than destination in itself. It has a genuine Victorian seaside character, though: a long sandy beach, one of the longest pleasure piers in Britain, and terraces of period townhouses climbing the hill above the esplanade. Be honest: much of the town centre feels dated rather than charming, and it trades heavily on day-trippers and ferry passengers rather than people staying to explore.

It's a useful base for reaching Carisbrooke Castle inland or crossing back to see Portchester and Southsea Castles on the mainland side, and Calshot and Netley are within easy reach too if you're touring Solent forts. We only list six hotels here, so choice is limited. Stay close to the esplanade near the pier and ferry terminal, since that's where the sea views and easy transport links both are.
