Sandown is a traditional English seaside resort on the Isle of Wight's east coast, built around a long sandy beach and a Victorian pier that's more amusements and chip shops than architecture. It's the kind of place families have been coming to for generations for buckets, spades and gentle nostalgia rather than sophistication, and the town centre reflects that: modest, slightly worn in parts, with plenty of ice-cream shops and not much nightlife.

Be honest: this isn't a design destination, and outside peak summer weeks it can feel sleepy to the point of shut. The real draw is the beach itself, sheltered and safe for swimming, plus easy access inland to Carisbrooke Castle for a day trip.
