Long Melford is a small Suffolk village that punches well above its weight architecturally: a mile-long high street lined with antique shops and timber-framed buildings, anchored by Holy Trinity Church, one of England's finest "wool churches", built on the back of the medieval cloth trade. It's also home to two notable stately houses, Melford Hall and Kentwell Hall, which draw a steady trickle of day visitors and give the place a genteel, National Trust sort of appeal.

Be honest: there isn't much nightlife or variety of restaurants here, and evenings are quiet once the antique dealers close up. It works well as a base for exploring the region, with Colchester Castle and Camulodunum within reach for Roman history and Hedingham Castle for something more medieval.
