Hotels in Nieuwmarkt, Amsterdam

Nieuwmarkt centres on its namesake square and the turreted Waag, a fifteenth-century city gate that once hosted anatomy lessons and now shelters a café terrace. Wedged between the old Jewish quarter and Chinatown, it mixes the Rembrandt House Museum, the Zuiderkerk and an antique-strewn Sunday market with excellent Asian dining along the Zeedijk. Quieter and more grown-up than the nearby red-light lanes, it suits culture-minded travellers who still want to walk everywhere. The metro stop and canals make it a handy base; evenings on the square are lively but rarely rowdy, and value beats the canal ring.
