Hotels in Alfama, Lisbon

Alfama is Lisbon's oldest and most evocative quarter — a labyrinth of steep alleys, tiled façades and miradouro viewpoints climbing to São Jorge Castle, with the mournful sound of Fado drifting from tiny taverns at night. The famous Tram 28 rattles through its heart. It suits romantics and walkers who want atmosphere, history and views, and don't mind the hills and steps (pack good shoes — it's not the easiest with luggage). Quieter by day, soulful by night, it's the Lisbon of postcards, and one of the most characterful places to stay in the city.
