Hotels in North Beach, San Francisco

North Beach is San Francisco's Italian-American quarter and Beat Generation heartland — the lanes around Washington Square Park, City Lights Books (where Lawrence Ferlinghetti published Ginsberg's Howl) and Vesuvio Café give the neighbourhood a literary and countercultural romance that hasn't entirely faded. Coit Tower stands above on Telegraph Hill; Chinatown is the next block east; the Ferry Building and Fisherman's Wharf are walkable. It suits romantics, literature lovers and cultural travellers who want a San Francisco base with genuine history and character. Hilly, lively and human-scaled — one of the most pleasant places in the city to wander without a plan.
