Hotels in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh made the steel that built America, and though the mills are long gone the city's bones still show it: this is where the Allegheny and Monongahela meet to form the Ohio, a wedge of land marked today by Point State Park and its 46-metre fountain. Locals call it the City of Bridges for good reason — there are more than 440 of them, more than Venice — strung across steep, wooded hills that make getting around a workout.

The old steel money bankrolled the Carnegie museums and the Andy Warhol Museum, the largest single-artist museum in the US, and the sandwich to order is a Primanti Brothers, chips and slaw stuffed inside the bread. It reinvented itself around health care, universities and tech after the mills closed, so expect a working city rather than a postcard. Stay Downtown or in the Strip District for walkable food, bridges and the museums.
