Hotels in Grassmarket, Edinburgh

Set beneath the sheer rock of the castle, the Grassmarket is a cobbled former market and execution square now ringed with pubs, restaurants and independent shops. Duck up Victoria Street, the curving rainbow-fronted parade said to have inspired Diagon Alley, or browse the boutiques of the West Bow. It suits sociable travellers who want history, atmosphere and nightlife in the square itself. Victoria Street climbs from it towards the Royal Mile, and the Meadows lie to the south. Wonderfully central but genuinely lively: expect stag parties and late-night noise at weekends, so pack earplugs.
