Hotels in Carlton, Melbourne

Carlton is Melbourne's Italian-Italian neighbourhood — Lygon Street's trattorias have fed the city since the 1950s post-war migration and some of the best have been there the whole time. The Melbourne Museum and Royal Exhibition Building (a UNESCO World Heritage Building and genuinely remarkable for a city this young) anchor the top end; the University of Melbourne campus runs through it. For coffee, Carlton does it particularly well: the espresso bar tradition predates the third-wave movement by decades. A 10-minute walk from the CBD or one tram stop. For a base where history and excellent cheap food overlap, Carlton earns its place in Melbourne's conversation.
