Hotels in Shambles, York

The Shambles is York's most famous medieval street — an impossibly narrow lane of overhanging timber-framed buildings that lean so far over the cobbles they almost touch, once the city's butchers' quarter, now a mix of independent shops and cafés that still draws every visitor to its entrance. Stay within five minutes' walk and the entire walled city — the Minster, the city walls, the Viking Centre, Clifford's Tower — is a morning on foot. The street is best before 9am when the tourist groups have not yet arrived; best of all is the lane beside it, which carries all the medieval atmosphere and none of the crowds.
